SK8R

SK8R is a 2D side scrolling skating game created for muscle development. Players skate through a city to complete deliveries. They must avoid obstacles and collect items to increase their score.

I implemented the following game systems:
- Food powerups based on Unity's ScriptableObject system
- Color map spawning (collectibles are generated in preset patterns based on a black and white image map)
- Scripted progress bar timer

Targeting Spastic Diplegia with Gameplay:

Menu Navigation is done through mouse and keyboard, however the game itself is played using either a Microsoft Kinect or ARKit/ARCore enabled device.

In designing our game, our target audience in mind was children with Spastic Diplegia (a form of Cerebral Palsy that impairs mobility mostly in the lower legs), aged 12 years and under. Ideally to help children before they hit a growth spurt. Physical therapists could choose a subset of exercises based on the individual player's capabilities.

Exercises a user would go through while playing the game would include: Knee Extensions, Marching, with more lower body exercises to be added with future development.

Some of our major considerations were that we had to utilize light to moderate-intensity exercises with a moderate and vigorous intensity level. This mandated that the game had to be playable from either a standing or sitting position.

Our goals were to help children in GMFCS levels 1 through 2, as they tend to have more capable motor ability and usually struggle with speed and balance, or need assistance to walk. Ideally, this game would be used as tool to assist physical therapists to help train these children to gain better strength and coordination, while being activity based, fun, and supportive of their muscle development.
